The American Society of Heating, Refrigerating and Air Conditioning Engineers has established energy efficiency standards for indoor air quality. The standard uses a rating system called minimum efficiency reporting value (MERV). The scale goes from 1 to 16, with an inefficient filter having a low number and an efficient filter having a large number. These ratings are based on the HVAC filter’s capacity for removing airborne particles.
